Understanding STC Ratings

Sound Transmission Class is an integer rating of how well a building partition reduces airborne sound. The below chart gives some examples of what can still be heard through a partition at various STC ratings.

STC What can be heard
25 Normal speech can be understood quite easily and distinctly through the wall
30 Loud speech can be understood fairly well, normal speech heard but not understood
35 Loud speech audible but not intelligible
40 The onset of “privacy”
42 Loud speech audible as a murmur
45 Loud speech not audible; 90% of the statistical population is not annoyed
50 Very loud sounds such as musical instruments or a stereo can be faintly heard; 99% of the population is not annoyed.
60+ Superior soundproofing; most sounds inaudible

Note: It is important to consider STC while selecting sound reducing partitions, but it cannot be solely relied upon if you are trying to reduce the noise of lower frequencies (such as HVAC system hum and bass drums). These lower frequencies are not applicable to the STC rating scale. If you are looking to reduce noise from these sources, contact us to speak with an acoustical consultant that can find the perfect solution for you.

STC Door Installation

STC rated doors should always be installed by a professional. There are quite a few complicated steps in the installation process that are critical to the performance of the door. On-site installation can be pretty easy if the door has been assembled prior to delivery by the factory. If the door arrives without being fully assembled, it can take up to 7 hours to complete the installation. Ideally, you want the door to be factory assembled (to ensure no errors occur while constructing the door onsite) and to save time in the installation process. When delivered fully assembled, the installation should take around 90 minutes.
